This Berkeley hills house, with spectacular views of San Francisco Bay, was dark and broken into small rooms with an inconvenient circulation flow. The clients desired a feeling of 'lightness' with an open feel and natural light and air. A 'spa-like' feeling was created in the remodeling of the kitchen, living and dining rooms.
A natural color palette was used, along with the juxtaposition of light-colored smooth surfaces with active zebrawood and European walnut. Large windows were added in the kitchen, a corner window was added in the dining area, walls were removed, the ceiling was raised, and the indoor-outdoor relationship was enhanced. Ash panels were installed on the living room ceiling, the stairs were remodeled, and built-in casework doubles as both living room furniture and new stairway guardrail.
